Some of our members recently visited! ( See below this article).

We have received news that our project has been accepted by the Provincial RTO. A cheque in the amount of $4000.00 has been donated to the Harambee 4 Humanity project to help build a school in Kenya.

Harambee 4 Humanity is a charitable organization founded in March 2007. The organization’s current priorities are to address the educational, health, economic and environmental needs of communities in Ewaso Ngiro and Maragua, Kenya. Harambee 4 Humanity is working in collaboration with these communities at the grassroots level to effect change that will be sustainable and will improve financial and educational opportunities for women and children. The organization’s main objective is to ensure that the basic rights of individuals and communities are met, so that they are able to achieve their full potential, lead and participate in their own development.

“Harambee”, in Kiswahili, means “pulling together”.

The building of a primary school on a 30 acre parcel of land in the village of Ewaso Ngiro is underway. The community has itself identified the benefits and lasting impact of a school which include: literacy and numeracy skills, one meal per day for each child, delay of marriage and childbirth until girls are older, health education (clean water, sanitation practices, healthy sexual development, basic medical care and the importance of sustainable environmental practices).  RTO/ERO Project – Service to Others 2009 funding supported support the building of the Oleleshwa Primary School in Ewaso Ngiro, which consists of 5 classrooms, a library, a kitchen and an outhouse.

Right now, Kyla Dent, Sue McKenzie and her husband, Len, are there helping with the actual building of the school.  Sue’s son, Alec Ring, will be leaving tomorrow to go and help.  He’s the architect who donated his time and talent to design the school, and there are sketches of it on the H4H website.

As some of you know, Kyla, full-time teacher and founder of H4H, began her sabbatical leave in February, 2010, and departed for Kenya at the end of March to work with community members and commence the construction of Oleleshwa Primary school, in Ewaso Ngiro. As the project that incited the establishment of the organization three years ago, it is so exciting and rewarding to see all of the cross-continental collaborations and efforts take root.

Donation

At the annual "To Hell with the Bell" breakfast in September, President Lorna Walkling presented a cheque to Linda Acton-Riddle, President of Habitat for Humanity Muskoka in the amount of $500.00

This money was directly from RTO District 6 Muskoka and included a donation of $200.00 from Margaret Couture.

Marg was running for the office of RTO Provincial President, and decided to donate rather than spend the money on promotional materials normally purchased to support a bid for the top RTO position. Marg is on the left of Linda, Lorna is on the right.

PS: Marg is now RTO Provincial President!
